Simple solutions for false alarm prevention.
You have a security system because you want the peace of mind knowing you're protecting your loved ones and your property – but you don’t want the hassle of false alarms. To prevent false alarms, and the frustration that comes with them, here are some easy precautions to take:
1. Check your control box battery – Low batteries are the #1 equipment related cause of false alarms. This battery should be changed every 2-3 years.
2. Annual inspection – We recommend having your alarm system checked each year, to be sure there is no loose, frayed or exposed wiring, warping of door or window frames or dust, webs and insects around motion detectors.
3. Position motion detectors – These should not be aimed directly at an air vent, fireplace or large mirrors. Don’t stack books or papers around detectors either, as this may trigger a false alarm.
4. Test your security system once a month to make sure it is reporting properly to the Safeguard Secure Operations Center. Follow these steps:
- Call our center and ask to place your system on test to avoid dispatch of authorities.
- Arm and set off your system using any zone like a door or window.
- Silence and then reset your system.
- Call Safeguard back to check on the signal we received and then ask to take the system off test.
5. Train all family members and employees – If everyone knows how to use your system, there's less of a chance for error.
6. Keep us informed – You got a new pet. You’re having telephone repair, cable service work or remodeling. Maybe you’ve rearranged your furniture or just decorated for the holidays, or there's a new member to add to your security list. Whatever the change, let us know, as your system may need to be adjusted.
